Congratulations    News from Chacewater School    Bowling Club    Churches Together    Wildlife VIC

Congratulations on a job well done!

Having moved to Chacewater from what was in effect a suburb of a town, which is not far short of 22 years ago, we were concerned, especially with young children at the time, that we would find it too quiet, with not enough to do.  How wrong we were.  Within weeks there were not enough days, or especially evenings to take everything on board, so if ever a village needed a magazine Chacewater certainly did.

From its humble beginnings as a single sheet, it has developed into a first rate comprehensive guide to village life.  From contact details of local councillors, information on village clubs and organisations, hints & tips on gardening & health, & a detailed diary of village events, all at our finger tips in 'What's On In Chacewater'.

I can't begin to think how many hours of work goes into its production month after month,  it's 'hat's off' to Roy & Brenda Bailey for their continued dedication in producing such a needed publication.

Here's to the next 200!

News from Chacewater School

The Summer Term is always an exciting time at the School.  We arrange a number of activities to make the most of the better weather!  The children always benefit from learning in the local environment.

This term a group of pupils from Class 4 went to school camp at Delaware.  They had a fantastic time canoeing, abseiling and rock climbing as well as practising their archery skills!  The whole school went on a trip down the River Fal from Truro to Falmouth as part of their Rivers Project.  We were joined by lots of volunteer helpers and staff from the University of Exeter.

Classes 1 and 2 held a ‘wedding’ at St Paul’s Church which was a great success!  A big ‘thank you’ to Fr Andrew for ‘conducting’ the ‘wedding service’.

We also held all our sports day, which was organised in collaboration with students from Truro College.

Lots of other events are planned such as our summer fayre and disco as well as the school play which is always a very popular event.  This year’s play is called ‘The Button Box’. Special thanks to the PTA who contribute to the success of these events.

Sadly, we say goodbye to Class 3’s Mr Eddy at the end of this term.  We will be welcoming our new members of staff in September.

The end of the school year is a good opportunity to say thank you to all the people from the community who contribute to the success of the school; these include the governors, staff, parents, volunteers and pupils.

CHURCHES TOGETHER IN CHACEWATER.

The Millennium Green was the place to be on Sunday 10th June.

At 11am, over 70 people attended a combined service between the Methodist Churches in Rev'd Jane Willcock's section, and members of St Paul's Church, in the Main Room of the Village Hall.

Jane was called away at the last minute to attend one of her members at the Local Hospice, so husband John stood in for her and did an excellent job.

This was followed by a picnic on the Millennium Green. The atmosphere in the Green was excellent - a bouncy castle, very kindly donated by 'Lanes of Cornwall' ~ was in constant use by the youngsters and much appreciated - special thank you to the Lane family for this gesture. In another area of the Green, Rounders proved very popular, and in a separate area again, Cricket proved popular as well.

The Millennium Green, as ever, was in excellent condition, and a big thank you to the Volunteers that keep it looking so nice.

The weather was beautiful, and it was lovely to see families and friends enjoying themselves. Let's hope we can do it again next year!!!!!!

WILDLIFE VIC

This time last year our newly-arrived, very keen Dutch vet took the opportunity to introduce herself through the pages of ‘What’s On’.

If you haven’t managed to get out to Jollys Bottom to meet her I’m afraid you’re too late!!  After working with us for a year and coping with the commute from South Wales, as well as us, Fieke has landed a job with the Institute of Zoology in London.  She will be working on cirl buntings and red kites among other things.  She joins Becki, our first assistant, who is doing a PhD and coordinating the Garden Bird Health Initiative.  One of our other assistants, Alex has also secured funding for a PhD at the Central Science Laboratory.

Several vet students have also benefited from Vic’s expertise in post mortem techniques as well as his all round general knowledge of disease and wildlife

We feel privileged to have worked with these young people (see us all together below) and helped them to move on in their chosen fields, particularly working with the wildlife about which we are so passionate.

Since opening in 2001 the WVIC has done over 1500 pms, discovering new diseases in pine martens, red squirrels, otters etc and building up a comprehensive data base of British wildlife.  We will continue to work with the Wildlife Trusts and various universities and publish the results of our research.  Vic has spoken at numerous meetings/conferences, locally, nationally and internationally stressing the importance of monitoring disease in our wildlife, not only for its own sake, but also the implications for human health and well-being.

Sadly we are unlikely to be employing another veterinary assistant as, due to DEFRA cuts affecting the Environment Agency funding of the otter post mortems, we will not have enough/any income!!!

However fear not!  We will still be doing post mortems (except otters and badgers) so please don’t stop bringing in your specimens.

Jane & Vic Simpson
