Chacewater Old Cornwall Society –

Our Annual General Meeting last month was a most enjoyable evening. A resumé of the past year was a reminder of how our members have had an entertaining year, both in Chacewater and by taking part in other events put on around Cornwall by other Old Cornwall Societies. As always, we were in awe of the amount of work carried out by our Recorder, who does so much work behind the scenes and assists so many people who contact him – especially if they are tracing their family history which includes a connection to Chacewater and its inhabitants.

When we came to the election of the committee, we said a big Thank You to Mrs Mavis Whitaker who had decided to step down after many years as Treasurer and ordinary member. She will be missed. We were delighted to welcome a new member to the committee – Mrs Linda Shevlin was unanimously voted on and we look forward to her input in future meetings. The officers for the next 12 months remain – President : Prebendary James Vincent; Chairman : Dr John Chesterfield; Secretary : Mrs Carol Heathcote; Treasurer : Mrs Angie Lory; Recorder – Mr Peter Mitchell. Ordinary members are – Mrs Jackie Bray; Mrs Bette Pearce; Mr Geoff Lory and Mrs Linda Shevlin.

We then enjoyed tea and coffee, and the raffle was drawn, before we welcomed our guest speaker, James Williams Esq. who told us about his term of office as the High Sheriff of Cornwall. It was a fascinating, informative, enlightening and totally captivating talk which had everyone’s full attention. I am certain that we all went home with a far greater knowledge of this historic role than we knew before our meeting !

The subject of this month’s meeting has absolutely nothing to do with a nodding dog or a car insurance company!! Our guest speaker has recently returned to Cornwall after a lengthy trip investigating post mining in the Americas and the Galapagos islands.
