Chacewater Millennium Green
Grand Opening

On Sunday 10th September 2000 Chacewater's Millennium Green was declared officially open by Dame Annette Penhaligon.  Click on the links to see photos of the occasion.

On a lovely hot, sunny Sunday afternoon, villagers led by St Agnes Silver Band processed from the Recreation Ground to the Green.  3 organisations brought their banner which were then displayed in the marquee.  As everyone gathered to listen to Dame Annette the band played for us.

Dame Annette Penhaligon, widow of David Penhaligon MP, who used to run our Chacewater Post Office performed the task of officially declaring the Green open.  She then planted a silver birch tree to commemorate the occasion.

The photographer wanted everyone to gather around the pond which had had its barrier removed for the afternoon, for a group photograph.

Then we all moved over to the long line of tables, which stretched from the picnic area right round in front of the marquee, to partake of tea.  This consisted of splits with strawberry jam and clotted cream [given by Rodda’s Creamery], tea treat saffron buns and tea.  During tea St Agnes Silver Band played for us in the marquee.  In the marquee was a display of photographs of old Chacewater provided by the Chacewater Old Cornwall Society and also a display of photographs of the development of the Green.  Everyone had a lovely afternoon.

The Trustees would like to thank all those kind people who helped with serving tea and buns.  Also all those who helped before the event to get the Green ready.  They all worked so hard!

And finally, we were delighted that the new permanent signs for the Green arrived just in time to be put in place before the opening.  The ground was particularly difficult near the lower pedestrian entrance and the men grappling with the stony ground found it a really difficult task.  We say a heartfelt thank you to them too.

Thank you.
