A Millennium Green is an area of open space to be enjoyed permanently by the local community and within easy walking distance of people's homes. A Millennium Green may be located in or on the edge of any city, town, village or hamlet. |
| Each Millennium Green has its own character. It is a place where people can relax, children can play and everyone can enjoy nature. Millennium Greens are permanent 'breathing spaces' for people of all ages. Millennium Greens are being created all over the UK with 50% grant funding from the Countryside Agency with funds from the Millennium Commission. | |
Chacewater's Millennium Green is situated alongside the Village Hall on a 1.6 acre sloping field that villagers have habitually used for their November 5th Bonfire Party and Guy Fawkes' Celebrations. Leased to the Chacewater Parish Council for 999 years, it is administered by the Chacewater Millennium Green Trust.
In addition to the funding by the Countryside Agency the Trust has also been awarded a grant of £25,000 by the County Environmental Trust.
The field is currently being transformed to provide level areas for children's informal play and for a picnic/barbecue area. There is to be a circle of granite boulders to mark the site for the Village bonfire, a wildlife pool with wetlands planting and a area for wildlife planting which the children from Chacewater School will be developing. Bench seats are being provided alongside the gently sloping meandering paths and recently some picnic tables. When all the groundwork has been completed and the grass has grown there will various indigenous plants - shrubs and trees planted to enhance the Green.
On Sunday 10th September 2000 the Green was officially opened by Dame Annette Penhaligon.
